Ten Reasons Why Kids Hate School

Bullying

School bullies are usually the primary reason why kids hate to go to school. Your child may be a victim of bullying and if he or she is, then as a parent you need to take action. You could begin by giving solutions to the child, so that he or she can help him/herself. This can be a good morale booster for the child. If this is not helping, you may need to go to school and inform the class teacher about the issue.

Peer pressure

Besides school bullies, negative peer pressure in other forms can affect children as well. Being unable to sit with a close friend, rude remarks from other children, a feeling of mistrust, not feeling welcome and feeling the lack of things that other children possess are a few causes that build up peer pressure. In such cases, it is best to talk with your child and build his/her confidence regarding the things he or she possesses.

Partial class teachers

The temperament of the class teacher also determines whether your kid is enjoying school or not. If a teacher is putting too much pressure on children, is rude with them or is showing favorism towards other children, you as an adult need to help your child again. If this is getting your child nowhere, you may need to have a discussion with the teacher or principal and make things work out for your child.

The transport

If teachers and students are not the issue, probably the issue could lie with the transport to school that you use. A rude bus driver, an unsafe feeling, badly behaving children on the bus or other such issues could be the reason of your child's anxiety and hence hatred towards school.

A jailed up perspective

For many kids school is a place where they are tied down, both physically and mentally. As compared to the freedom to do what they wish at home, school is a place where they have to sit at their seats and follow the teacher's instructions. In such cases, parents need to constantly remind kids that school is where they would learn many new things. They would also make more friends and know more about the world we live in.

Boredom

Parents also state that many kids who are bright students often state that they hate school. They instead show a preference to stay at home and watch tv. This could be because of the regular routine in school, which bores them and makes them look for change. Encouraging such children about the fun that they could have in school is the only way to help them attend.

Separation anxiety

If a kid is getting much of tender love and attention at home, he may hate going to school due to separation anxiety. Kids are very attached to parents, especially mothers and fear to step out of their comfort zone. However separation anxiety is more common in the earlier years of schooling, and passes by with the years to come.

Health problems

Health problems like a learning disability, poor vision, insufficient stamina can in turn cause mental weakness and make a child unable to cope at school. If a parent suspects that a child may have issues with vision or general health, a check up with a paediatrician is best recommended.

Issues at home

Various issues at home can also trigger off a child hating school behavior. Psychologists reveal that in many homes where parents fight, kids often feel that they need to be present to support their mothers. Similarly, there are various such issues at home that make kids prefer to stay home, where they feel that they are required much more.

Parental attitude

Finally a parent's attitude towards schooling and children can also have negative affect. Parents may be pressurizing children to perform better, take on harder tasks and improve at school. The attitude of forcing children to do something, often puts them off a task and thus they begin hating school. Slowing down, improving your attitude and motivating children with praise and support can work wonders in such situations.

The most difficult thing for many parents is to counsel a crying kid and fight his unknown fears. But it is here that most kids need firm parental support. They need a sounding board to sound off their fears and you could do best by hearing them out. Shouting, screaming and hitting children does not help. However listening to them, whether you have the solutions or not and encouraging them to talk things out can really work wonders. Finally if you need to confront the teachers, do so in a preferably non confrontational manner. If things are still not helping, you may have to consider changing your child's school.
