Middle School Student Killed at School
Remember being in middle school and how difficult it was to be a student at that time. I recall it being very difficult as I had to wear a back brace around ninth grade and was stared at by younger children and mocked in and out of school for it ( mostly behind my back). Now imagine going to school and being afraid of school violence. In the past we have had school shootings like at Columbine and Virginia Tech.
This Friday a child was shot as he walked to his next class. The School, Discovery Middle School, was the site of a murder. The child, Todd Brown, was shot in the back of his head and pronounced dead later that day. The reason for the death is unclear although it is speculated it related to gang activity. The murderer is in custody at the jail.
I was in eighth grade when the Columbine shooting happened and I remember a sense of panic in our school, as it seemed possible a shooting like that could happen anywhere. Teachers sat with students at that time discussing ways to make the school safer. After that point some schools even went so far as to install metal detectors to make sure children did not bring any weapons to school.
Why do schools still seem unsafe with all the precautions being taken? This is a question that each school needs to look into on its own to decide what would be best for the school. It seems children have a lot to deal with in school without death being something they need to worry about. Children have more homework, are bullied, and have to deal with the pressure of good grades to get into a decent college. Schools need to do a better job of keeping children safe before another incident happens like Columbine or like this shooting. One positive thing is that a lot of schools are somewhat prepared for violence from intruders or children, but there needs to be a better way to prevent the violence from going farther than it already has in schools.
