Creating a Broader Understanding of Those Things Which Make Us Human! Ideal and Dream Middle School
IDEAL and Dream School models and encourages students to become optimistic thinkers, goal oriented risk takers, innovative problem solvers and dynamic leaders. IDEAL and Dream School students believe in their dreams and take action to make them a reality.
I was reviewing the concept of compound words in language Arts during shared reading. I chose the book "If You Take a Mouse to the Movie" that had quite a few examples of this particular type of noun. I gave the Children a hand signal to show if they heard or recognized a compound word. They had to raise their hands above their head slowly (calm- com), then "pound" on their knees to show recognition.
Next, I gave a word card with the first part of a compound word (example: boy, grand, any) to five children and gave the remainder of the class a word card with the second part of a compound word (example: friend, mother, time) and they had to line up together to form words. It was a fun way to get their bodies moving, help them to recognize what a compound word looked like, and what a compound word sounds like. All of this took place in about 15 minutes... we move quickly in Second Grade!
At Ideal and Dream Middle School, a private school offering classes from Pre K thru 8th Grade, my morning journal time has become one of the nicest, calmest, most productive and intrapersonal times of the week. I have come to really treasure the fifteen minute period that we call "Emotional intelligence". During that time, I can spark a discussion, listen to a problem, read a story, model journal writing, or handle a behavioral situation. It helps me make an intimate connection to my students and helps them do the same with each other. Interpersonal "dramas" can often escalate if left untended, but when we have an opportunity to de-emphasize the little dilemmas we have while growing up; we create a broader understanding of those things which make us human! I love to be able to provide a "moral compass" for these young, developing personalities. When I share stories of my own experiences as a child, particularly the ones where I am hurt, scared, or sad, the students show such amazing empathy. It helps to bridge the gap between "all-knowing adult" and "emerging child".
