Parents, teachers, and students expect schools to be a safe place. Acts of violence disrupt the learning process, not to mention having a profoundly negative emotional impact on those affected by school violence. According to a recent report on school crime and student safety by the CDC and the Department of Education, students aged twelve through eighteen are the victims of more than 2.7 million crimes at school each year. Over the past year, fifteen percent of all high school students reported being involved in a physical altercation on school property. Just how common are crimes on school campuses?

28 percent of students in middle school and high school reported being bullied in the last six months.A significant portion of these students also admitted avoiding one or more places at school for their own safety. Nearly 20% of students in middle and high school report being threatened with a beating.

According to the Gun-Free Schools Act Report, nearly four thousand students are expelled each year for bringing a gun to school. Perhaps surprisingly, more than a third of these expulsions involve middle school students, and a tenth involve even younger students. School violence might be a stereotypically high school occurrence, but it happens at all levels of the school system, even among kids as young as seven or eight years old.

In addition to incidents involving firearms, there are also thousands of other crimes, from physical assault to threat to vandalism, happening on school campuses worldwide. Not only gun-related expulsions, but also violence in general, is actually more common in middle schools than at high schools. Students aged twelve through fourteen are more likely than older students to become victims of crime at school.

It is likely that violence, theft, and drugs will continue to be significant problems in the school system. A tenth of all high school students reported being threatened with, or injured with, a weapon in the previous year. Students in middle school or high school are more likely to be victims of theft while at school than while away for school. A quarter reported that drugs had been offered to them on school property within the past year.

The point to take away from this is that kids are not immune from violence in schools, no matter their age. This might seem like an urban high school problem, but it happens in schools of all sizes, and in all locations. A staggering 86 percent of all public schools reported one or more serious violent incidents in the 2005-2006 school year. The overall crime rate within schools is 46 reported crimes each year per 1,000 students. If you have a child at school, no matter their age, they must be prepared to deal with the possibility of such situations arising.

Your options to protect your children from violence at school are unfortunately limited. The vast majority of schools have a 'no tolerance' policy, meaning that students may not carry such devices as pepper spray or a stun gun. They can, however, bring a personal alarm to school, and this can be invaluable in alerting teachers and other adults to a violent or potentially violent confrontation.

Current issues in education range over a series of subjects, some of them quite serious and needing very immediate attention of all concerned. These issues range from an increasing trend in incidents of violence at schools, concern about maintaining good academic standards, providing value added education to evolve and develop human beings with integrated personality traits and so on. One of the most important of these is the problem of violence at school.

Violence of some type or other is an unwelcome scenario in many of our schools today. Even if we take consolation in the fact that violence is caused by only a small number amidst the large mass of student population, it is taking away the credibility of our social structure.

According to reports, 270 violent deaths have occurred at schools across the USA over the last couple of decades. Statistically, this may not be a huge number; but statistics apart, every precious life that had been lost should be considered as having an impact and value beyond the borders of statistics, which is after all good only for the record books of the authorities. Most of these 270 fatalities have resulted as a consequence shooting incidents in schools. All violent incidents and occurrences also need not result in deaths but can leave bodily scars, injuries etc as well as psychologically indelible marks on the mental framework of the children who have been affected by this malady of violence in our schools.

One of the most common types of violence in schools is a physical attack, generally without any weapons unless some one uses a sharp pencil or a divider or a compass as a weapon to cause injury to others; in addition to the common incidents of the bully attacking those who appear to be weaker than him. At elementary school levels occurrences of violent incidents may be few and far between, but at middle and high school levels they are more frequent. At high school level, violence may take undesirable formats such as fighting with a weapon, sexual attacks, serious physical attacks with or without weapons and perhaps murder too. Injuries resulting from self defense attacks, unintentional but injurious attacks may also fall in the category of violence in yet another form.

Considering that violence has come to exist, we must try to find ways and means to take away this malady from the fabric of our school culture. It is the duty of the parents, the teachers, the administrators, community leaders, the students and all others concerned to plan, prepare and implement solutions so as to eliminate the evil of violence from our schools. Punishment and/or corrective measures after the event are less effective than preplanned steps in dealing with this menace. Establishing good security systems in schools to prevent unauthorized access by strangers, preventive steps to prohibit carrying any form of weapons to schools (provide metal detectors to security staff); appointing full time watch and ward staff at schools, providing ID badges to everyone inside the school premises etc are some steps which need to be immediately taken. Soft issues such as creating an awareness of the undesirable aspects of violence, creating a god fearing nature among the growing minds and personality traits of students, the karmic influence of one's actions etc can also be cultivated among parents, students and teachers.

Frequent interactive sessions and open discussion forums between teachers, parents and students should be organized so as to note and eliminate tendencies for violence among the young populace. Lessons learnt from previous experiences, the impact of even minor incidents on health of the body and mind, character formation etc should be brought out in such open forums. Awareness creation is vital so that schools become safe and an environment for studies can be generated without being intimidated unnecessarily.

The primary reason why students attend business schools is to increase their salary potential and their marketability in the business world. Consider the following pointers in choosing the right business school.

•Cost of studying. If budget is an issue, scout for a school with reasonable rates and which wouldn't compromise the quality of education offered. A business school degree can cost you a lot of bucks, therefore cost should be carefully considered before applying.

With reference to the article by Tania Broughton entitled "Schools can't just nail defaulters" (Mercury 9th July 2008), based on an article by Phillipa Tucker which appeared in the July 2008 De Rebus.

Phillipa Tucker is reported as stating that her article in De Rebus was written "in the hope that just one lawyer will turn around and simply say "no" when approached by a governing body to debt-collect." Well this is one attorney who will definitely say "yes" when approached by a governing body to collect school fees, because:

(a) I feel that government schools have a legal right to collect school fees in terms of the South African Schools Act ("the Schools Act") when the fees are legally due and payable in terms of the Schools Act (Section 41); and
(b) I believe without the payment of these fees education standards in these schools will drop and irreparably damage school education in this country and consequently the future of this country.

Ms Tucker in her article rightly points out that the largest portion of the South African Government's budget, R121.1 billion in 2008, is allocated to education and has been for a number of years. This has enabled the Minister of Education to increase the number of non-fee charging schools, where parents are completely exempt from paying school fees. These non-fee charging schools are determined by various measurement standards and are primarily in previously disadvantaged areas where the needs are greatest. In this regard I applaud the Minister for her efforts to bring free education to the poor.

While I do not condone any school which operates outside of the provisions of the Schools Act, and in fact I advocate and train schools in complying with the Schools Act, one needs to take a different perspective on the whole issue of the school fees, namely the schools` perspective, the effects of non-payment of school fees and the results of too many parents qualifying for exemptions in terms of the Schools Act.

I also question whether the case of Hunt Road Secondary does set a legal precedent, as it was settled by consent and the order made by Morley AJ was just giving effect to that settlement agreement.

Unfortunately, while the South African Government is providing a large chunk of its annual budget to education and the South African Bill of Rights provides for the right to education (which requires a degree of interpretation), the practicalities of providing this prove to be extremely challenging.

Firstly, the level of education provided at these non-fee charging schools is not of the same standard as the government schools which are entitled to charge fees in terms of the Schools Act (which are primarily previous model C schools). So much so that we encounter many educators (teachers) in the non-fee charging schools who elect to rather send their own children to fee charging schools because they know the difference in the education provided and they want the better education for their children.

Secondly, the current fee paying schools only receive state funding in an amount which covers, in many cases, only 50% to 60% of the teaching staff salaries and even less than the costs of their water and lights for the year - the outstanding balance is funded by school fees paid by the parents.

A common misconception with parents is that if they apply and qualify for an exemption, then the state provides the school with payment of the exempt amount. This is not true - it is the paying parents who cross-subsidise the non-paying parents. As the exemptions are calculated based on the parent's salary in relation to the school fees, what this means is that as more parents qualify for exemptions, so the school fees paid by the paying parents have to increase to compensate for this loss of income and this results in more parents qualifying for exemptions and so the result is a spiral downward for the school's funding.

I submit that the current exemption requirements are, in fact, far too lenient on the parents if measured against the very real needs of the schools. Parents in many cases are enjoying the benefits of cellular telephones, Satellite TV, expensive brand name clothes and many other consumer luxuries at the expense of a better education for their children. Yet it is the schools who are trying to make ends meet with their budgets (they are non-profit organizations), and still provide a reasonable standard of education, that are painted as the villains by Ms Tucker in her article.

Essentially, the challenge is an ideological one, where as Winston Churchill said, "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." Do we attempt to lift the education levels of the non-fee charging schools by trying to increase their funding without burdening their indigent parents, or do we pull down the standards of the fee charging schools by starving them of the funding they so desperately need to continue delivering a reasonable education at reasonable cost? I submit that if the current fee charging government schools are destroyed by being starved of school fees then the divide between the "haves" and the "have nots" will be even greater, with the middle income earners` children receiving poorer education and the children of the wealthy the only ones receiving a good education.

Welcome to the land of smiles!

So, what should one consider when selecting a Thai cooking school?

Let me start by saying when I did my first Thailand cooking school research I found none of the cooking school websites complete in their information. To know their whole story, like how much or what dishes, I had to phone each school. Nearly every call was answered in their limited second language English which left me unsure of their understanding my question or if their answers actually answered my question as the answers were often obscure or incomplete.

Information like price should be on the website if it's not why is it a secret? I can tell you why, it's because some customer referers won't send students to the schools whose website shows prices as they are uneasy about scalping posted school fees. And why are the dishes taught a secret?

1. Does the school website answer all your questions or does it leave you with unanswered questions... There's a reason for nondisclosure... and I'm positive it's not that they don't know what they charge or what they teach...

2. Location: is important even if you are not coming through Bangkok you can still apply this check list to your Thai cooking school selection research. There are reputable cooking schools in every major center. Some schools have small storefront schools to leave you with the impression of small classes but these store fronts are used as student pick-up centers from where you will be delivered to a large class comprised of many store front pick-ups.

3. Teacher experience: A true answer to this question may be impossible to obtain. But again I ask why is it not post it to their website? Where did the teacher train or they simply able to cook and speak basc English?

4. Teacher qualification: As in question 2 a true answer to this question would likely be an exception. Most of the teachers will not have degrees or certificates of culinary study nor will they have a Thai Dept. of Skills level 1 or higher diploma.

5. Teacher Style: Ask if they teach "the craft", the technique to Thai cuisine as many schools instruct their teacher not to take the time to impart this to you as it is time consuming.

6. The School: Remember... Thailands' temperatures will be between 30 and 40 degrees celcius and if you are in some alley school in the open air and you fire up the gas burners you can bet you're gonna sweat! A climate controlled school costs more to operate and as a result will cost more for a class but provides for clean cool air during your class. One outdoor school was simply a private residence porch bar-be-que used as a school! Do you really want to sit on the floor, Thai style, to prepare your ingredients? Why not use a table and chair? Do they overbook? If so, will you actually cook or be like in the audience and watch while others cook?

7. Price: Costs are important and no one likes to be taken!. My research found rates as high as 1,000 baht per dish with the lowest being 800 per set of 5 dishes in an outdoor setting with the average price being near 300 baht per dish and air con schools averaging 400 per dish or 2,400 baht for 6 dishes.

8. Notoriety: Some schools are all about their dog and pony shows, dressed in Thai formal wear they dance and sing and rhyme to you. One such world famous school appears to believe you will not be back for more classes as they teach only one set of Thai dishes. It's one thing to know how to cook but it's another to be able to teach!

More than a sport: High School Football

High School football is a great experience. Most people only see the huge hits and violence displayed by young men on Friday nights. There is much more to high school football than what the fans see for those few hours on Friday. I played high school football, so I will tell you about what happens behind the scenes. Some of the things I talk about may not apply to all high school football teams, I am just telling you my experiences. For you to understand that high school football is more than a sport, I will give you a background on what happens throughout the year.

Most people do not know this, but the football season starts on January 1st each year. I know what you are thinking. You are asking how the season could start eight months before the first game. Well, football teams start their workouts right after New Year's Day. The team gets together and talks about what they want to accomplish that year. You set goals, and then you set checkpoints to keep you on track to completing that goal. For most teams, the final goal is to win a State Championship at the end of the year. Checkpoints that lead up to that goal will probably include a victory in a tough game. After spending only about thirty minutes doing this as a team, the first workout begins. Usually, the team will do some core workout movements to get their bodies ready for the rest of the year. They will do some things like squats, benchpress, power cleans, deadlifts, push ups, pull ups, and situps, lifting only a small amount of weight. If you lift too much, you will not prepare yourself very well for the year, possibly opening up the chance of hurting yourself. That first workout usually makes each player so sore that they are unable to get out of bed the next morning. That is what takes place on the first day of the high school football season.

Players will lift weights throughout the entire year, including during the fall. Weightlifting is the only thing they do for the first half of the year. They lift weights four days a week. These brutal workouts bring together everyone on the team, forming close friendships through blood, sweat, and tears in the weightroom. These workouts last throughout the summer months. During the summer, teams go to camps to prepare for two a days practice. My school team went on a lot of camps over the summer. They went to places such as Troy University, Auburn University, and Western Kentucky University. These camps apply the strength gained up to this point to the game of football. The long, hot practices bring teams even closer. That is what leads up to the first official practice.

July 20th, about four weeks before school starts, is the first day of practice. This is when you realize that your summer is over and everything you have done up to this point was easy compared to what will be taking place for the next few weeks. Practice starts at two o'clock in the afternoon, just after the hottest part of the day. That practice lasts until seven o'clock. Then, you get a thirty minute break to eat a sandwich and drink water or gatorade. Then, from seven thirty until nine thirty, the second practice took place. That brutal practice schedule lasts five days a week until school starts. These practices are tough and focus on technique.

Once school starts, practice is moved back to three days a week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. These practices last from right after school until dark. Thursday is the day off to rest up for the Friday night game. These practices focus less on technique and more on game preparation. Weightlifting was moved to six thirty in the morning on Monday and Wednesday. Game film was watched Thursday morning and the team ate breakfast together on Friday morning. After a long ten week season, the long awaited playoffs begin. Each game could possibly be your last. Only the close teams will succeed. There are up to five games in the playoffs, the last one being the state championship game. The end of the season and all of the playoffs take place in October, November, and December, when the weather gets colder. From the intense heat of the beginning of the season to the frigid chill of the end of the year, practice continues until you lose in the playoffs, or win state.

Football players have no lives from the end of the summer until potentially, early December. Most people do not see this, they see the couple hours of fun on Friday nights. They call the football team "gay" for being so close, without understanding how or why this closeness has formed. All of the hours and hours of hard work, the blood, sweat, and tears, and the tough and unbearable practices form a brotherhood within the football team. Football players fight through these struggles together and become close friends. My fellow seniors in high school were very close to me. They were more than brothers to me. I could ask them to do anything for me and they would do it without question. That is why high school football is so special.

Now, to put down the ideas that football is only violence and anger. The intensity shown by football players appears to be soley violence or anger. That has nothing to do with it. Working as hard as you possibly could all year long, why would you not try your hardest in the game, when it really mattered. Football teaches character. When you are in a close game in the fourth quarter, your true character shows. Everyone can be a leader during warm ups. Not everyone can be a leader in the tough games in the fourth quarter, when pure exhaustion is setting in. Can you be a leader in that situation? This is a struggle that is defeated every day at practice and on every Friday night. Now, lets apply this to the real world. If you are a small bussiness owner who is on the verge of bankruptcy, what would you do. High School football teaches this character. It is easy to be happy and successful when things are going well, but how do you hold up when things aren't going so well. High School football also forms life long friendships. Not only are these friends going to be there for you, but they will be the right friends as well. They will be friends with honesty, integrity, and true character. Football teaches you how to be a man. Coaches constantly lecture the importance of hard work, honesty, integrity, and confidence, on and off the field. These coaches hold high expectations for their players. This will set habits that will lead to success later in life. All of these things prove that football is more than a sport.

In conclusion, I think football is a great sport. Not only is it fun to play and entertaining to watch, but it teaches lessons that can be applied to life. Even more, high school football is a great thing that everyone should at least try. The shear brutality of the sport is not for everyone, but you don't know if you will like it or not until you try. Football forms characters, friendships, and memories that last forever. These principles keep young men out of trouble in one of the most important learning stages of their lives. That is why High School football is more than just a sport.

One of the highest national honors an Oklahoma School (or any other school in the nation, for that matter), can receive is being named a Blue Ribbon School. The Blue Ribbon honors schools that have closed achievement gaps and where students are excelling at high levels. For the 2006 - 2007 school year, several Oklahoma Schools have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. More than 50 schools in the state have been honored since this program began in 1982. Six Oklahoma Schools were honored for the school year. Four elementary schools and two middle schools received the honor.

The number of K-12 schools, public or private, that each state can nominate depends on that state's population. 60 percent of schools nominated each year for the Blue Ribbon status are recognized by the federal government. All six of the nominated Oklahoma Schools won the recognition. These Oklahoma Schools are recognized because they have met criteria in two areas. These requirements are: improvements made by low-income students, and schools that have scored in the top 10% on the state's standardized tests.

Advances in technology have been made in Oklahoma Schools. More than 200,000 computers are available for students' use, at a rate of one computer for every three students. Ninety-nine percent of Oklahoma Schools classrooms have internet access. A majority of this progress in technology comes from the federal E-Rate program, local bond issues and grants, and upgrades for schools and libraries in high poverty areas.

Oklahoma Schools not only added technology to the classrooms, but have also integrated standards defining basic skills of technology into its core curriculum for Pre-K through 12th grade, known as the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS). Students must learn the operation of a computer, application of software as a tool, problem-solving skills, telecommunications skills and ethical and legal issues in using technology.

Oklahoma Schools have shown improved performance in reading and math at all levels between 2002 and 2006. Achievement gaps between different ethnic groups have narrowed between 2002 and 2006 in reading at all grade levels tested. The biggest improvements were seen in elementary math, but reading scores have also increased.

In the Technology Counts 2007 report released March 29, Oklahoma Schools earned an overall B- compared to the national average of a C+. The state's schools scored an A- in the use of technology for student standards, establishing a virtual school and offering computer-based testing. Back-to-school time is just a few weeks away. Finally children can stop complaining about being bored at home, and parents can breathe a sigh of relief for the needed break. However, this time can also bring financial challenges for many parents who are faced with rising costs and shrinking budgets.

What can parents to do when the prices of everyday necessities are climbing out of reach, their paycheques remain constant, and their kids keep demanding the latest, coolest stuff to go back to school? If you are faced with this dilemma, take at look at the following money-saving tips:

Make a budget

As with all your other spending needs, it's best to make a budget. Know exactly how much money you can afford to spend on back-to-school and allocate funds accordingly. Plan to spend more money on important items like shoes, but cut back on the cost of disposable supplies such as stationery. Involve your children in this budgeting process, so that they can appreciate why you may not be able to fulfill all their desires for expensive items.

Start early

Get a head start by getting the book and supply lists as soon as possible from your child's school. Starting early gives you enough time to hunt for better deals, and if you wait until the last minute you might be forced into buying higher-priced items without concern for the cost. To really think ahead, continually look out for off-peak sales during the year on standard items like crayons and exercise books.

Although these might be able last for more than one school year, they may be rejected by your kids next year if they are out of fashion.

Don't buy everything at once

Find out which items are really needed for the start of school. Some books may not be used until the following terms, so you could concentrate on buying for the first term if money is limited. Check around at home before you start shopping, to see if any of your children's clothes still fit, or if you had stored away extra pencils or notebooks that were never used. Don't buy too many clothes in your kids' current sizes - buy some one size larger to take care of growth spurts during the school year.

Team up

Wholesale shopping may be the answer to cutting costs. While you might not need three dozen notebooks or a case of pencils for your own children, you could join with other parents and purchase supplies together. You could also check with them for school books and equipment that their kids have outgrown, which might be appropriate for your younger children. Some schools and churches have organized swap meets where these exchanges can be done.

Check out alternative shopping locations

If you have internet access and a credit card, shopping online can provide you with more variety and significant savings. Stick to well-known sites such as Amazon.com, Target.com or Walmart.com to find deals on school supplies and children's clothing. Take advantage of outlet malls and other inexpensive options overseas, by combining your summer vacation with an annual shopping excursion for your children.

2. Though home schooling, in one way or another, inhibit negative influences on home schoolers, children sometimes do not have as many friends as those going to traditional public or private high school.
3. Pressure on part of the parents to make their children within the same level as other kids despite the fact that they are in a homeschooling program.

Every part of this world has different variations and form of schooling for different age brackets.

An "alternative school" differs from the traditional in terms of place of education. Curriculum adopted in alternative schools is much different than the ones offered in most public schools. They may also differ with the matters and lessons being introduced and discuss but both were profoundly rooted philosophical, political or scholarly beliefs.

Another advantage of a nontraditional school is that they may offer something that was missing from a public school--namely individualized consideration and the facility to diverge from the requirements mandated by officials. This is one of the primary benefits, as it allows parents to make choices for their children, rather than being stuck in a cycle of poorly performing schools. It also provides the benefit of giving schools motivation to continue performing well, as parents will be able to remove their children if the school is failing.

Potential Drawbacks of Voucher Programs

Parents who are in areas that have a voucher program should do research to ensure that the school they choose gives their child the best possible education. Then, they should remain involved in the child's schooling, encouraging the child to perform well, no matter where they go to school. Finally, they should work with teachers to make the most of the school years for their children.

It seems like school violence is getting worse, but statistics show that the chance of a child being killed in an incident of school violence is around one in a million. In fact, a child is 50 times more likely to encounter a violent death outside of school. These are pretty compelling statistics, but parents still worry about their children's safety at school. Parents perceive incidences of school violence to be much more common than they actually are, simply because of the attention the media gives to the issue. School violence is terrible and deserves to be covered, but parents should not allow themselves become paralyzed with the thought of losing their child to school violence. Preparation and planning are always better than fear.

Families all over the United States plan for various natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes, yet few families plan their reaction to an incidence of violence. Explaining to children what they should do if something violent were to happen at their school is a great way for parents to feel more comfortable about leaving their children at school. While nervousness about the issue is understandable, it should not be all consuming. Addressing the issue head on is a great way to calm a parent's anxious nerves.

In the rare event that violence does breakout at your child's school, it will be better to have some kind of plan in place than none at all. For parents, coming up with a personal plan for this type of issue will be difficult, since various law enforcement agencies will be directing rescue efforts. The policies of each agency will differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so parents are advised to listen to the authorities and keep their eyes on LOCAL news broadcasts for information on how to be reunited with their children.

For children trapped in a school where violence has occurred, advise them to:

--Stay calm. Maintaining regular breathing will help. It may be tough at first, but it will help. Calculated and calm decision making is always better than random and chaotic decision making.

--Always listen to the teacher. Teachers receive special training for these types of incidences. They should be listened to at all times.

--If a child is separated from their teacher or other school staff, advise the child to stay put, wherever they are. While this may sound morbid, many survivors of school violence reported that playing dead kept them alive.

School violence is never a nice topic to discuss, but it is one that is important to any parent with children still in school, whether they are in kindergarten or college. Despite what the media portrays, schools are one of the safest places for children to be, even safer than their own homes. A school violence reaction plan is one of those things that parents will be glad to have if they ever need it, even though they may never use it.
