High school principal dies after school shooting

The son of a police detective shot two administrators at his high school on Wednesday (Jan.5,2011)  and one of them later died in hospital, authorities said.

The 17-year-old student, Robert Butler, Jr., shot the principal and assistant principal, then left the school and killed himself in his car a few blocks away.

Butler, who transferred in November to Millard South High school, left a suicide note on a social media site that said the school "drove me to this."

"Everybody that used to know me I'm sry but Omaha changed me and (expletive) me up and the school I attend is even worse ur gonna here about the evil (expletive) I did but that (expletive) school drove me to this. I wont u guys to remember me for who I was b4 this ik. I greatly affected the lives of the families ruined but I'm sorry. goodbye," Butler posted on his Facebook page.

Butler had been suspended from the school on Wednesday morning, when classes resumed after the winter break, for using his vehicle to tear up the football field, local media reported.

Butler's motive was under investigation, Omaha Police Chief Alex Hayes told reporters, but his father was a police detective, which gave the son access to firearms.

"Tragedy has hit the Omaha Police Department as the suspect's father is an Omaha Police detective," Hayes said.

"We are talking to him."

Assistant principal Vicki Caspar was critically wounded in the shooting and died on Wednesday evening at a local hospital, a police statement said. She was a veteran administrator at the school, Millard Schools Superintendent Keith Lutz said.

The principal, Curtis Case, was in stable but serious condition at Creighton University Medical Center, according to spokeswoman Kelsey Archer.

He had been at the school for five or six years, Lutz said.

The school was equipped with security cameras and guards and performed safety drills, Lutz said. "But nothing prepares you," he said.

Some features of this accident: Hours after the school day ended, there's still plenty of activity in the parking lot as students and parents come to get their vehicles. There are still reminders though of the tragic scene that unfolded here today.

"The whole, it would never happen to me comes back to mind and Millard South, it would never happen to Millard South and it kind of just took me by surprise and I'm not really sure what to think about it," said senior Nate Fowler.

Many students did not know the shooter, Robert Butler Jr., he wasn't at Millard South for very long.

"It's insane, why would you even want to do that? Let alone go and kill yourself afterward. Why take someone else with you," said senior Rebecca Lorence.

Some did know Butler, Junior Doug Coffin had a class with him and remembers his personality. "He was really outgoing, talkative. He wasn't shy at all. I got to know him quick when he transferred."

Coffin says he and Butler had a conversation Wednesday morning about some trouble Butler was in with school administrators. "He told me a story that he was drifting on the track and that was about it and he would have got like one week in Juvie or something like that and I know Miss Kaspar called him down to the office."

There are tire tracks in the snow on the Millard South track and leading up to the stadium. It's unknown if they were caused by Butler, but there are signs someone was there.

At 8:00 p.m., crime scene investigators were still collecting evidence. Despite the flashing lights and police tape, students had high hopes that the school will be back to normal soon.

"It's a really, really traumatic thing and it's all very surreal. I still feel kind of in shock that this would happen to me and all my friends in my school that I've known for three years," said Junior Zakk Smith.

Smith and others realize though, that the healing will take time.

My own personal experience has recently brought me to a realization that even in my own family, I can be looked at as if I am some kind lazy piece of crap that has decided to sit online all day and surf the web.

That since I do not go in to a regular J.O.B. on a daily basis, and since I do not punch the 9 - 5 clock, there must be something wrong with me and that I am hiding something.

Recently, what I thought was a simple and normal conversation, felt more like an inquisition and trial of how inadequate I was for society. This by someone in my own family whom I hold in the highest regard.

"What's the big deal with Facebook?" and "Who wants to hear that I am going to bed on Twitter?"

Although I agree to a certain point that maybe hearing about someone going to sleep for the night is somewhat overkill.

Social media toady is, in my opinion the last frontier for someone to walk in to from ANY industry and instantly have access to an endless list of prospects that are in need of what you have to offer them.

Is there a skill and a proper way of reaching them?

Absolutely.

Should you proposition and solicit everyone in social media with what you have to offer?

Absolutely NOT.

Let me get back on track here.

What I want to share with you today is not about social media etiquette, it's about the dream killers that walk into each of our lives on a daily basis.

I know that people may, or may not try to crush your dreams intentionally but all the same, the sting still bites just the same.

So is it that people are just so set in their old ways of what and how business should be done? Is it that the age gap is so different?

I am certainly not the first that has ever made a living online and certainly I will not be the last.

Then what is it?

Why must individuals feel that their own old school ways of doing things in life should be good for everyone else in a new school generation?

Let's face some facts.

Society today is not anywhere near what it use to be. Look at so called job security. Maybe when past generations had started to work for a company decades ago, they would work for the same company until retirement and their retirement would be set.

Now a days a person is fortunate to even be offered an employer sponsored health care plan. Long gone are the days where a person works for the same company until they retire. It's more common place for a person to work at four or five companies in their entire life before they hang it up.

On top of that, you had better be up to date on the most current technologies and online applications in order to stand a fighting chance at beating out the young, eager college kid that is willing to work at half your pay.

You don't have to look too far to see how many news stations, late night shows or even prime time shows are embracing social media in order to widen their audience reach.

If you still have doubts, just turn on CNN (Constant Negative News) at least that's what it should stand for. If you don't know by now I HATE the news, but I will save that for another rant. Anyway, you will see that they are always asking you to send them your comments on Twitter or Facebook.

Gee you think they may be on to something?

Here's the bottom line. First I love all of my family. I would do anything for any of them at the drop of a hat. I know that they mean well and maybe their old school ways of thinking is their self defense mechanism and their way of trying to keep me "safe".

However, it's time that they accept the fact that technology is constantly evolving and for me, I have found it best to embrace it and stay on the forefront of it.

I have never been a 9-5 type of person who puts his fate in some companies hand who could at a moments notice close their doors or terminate my employment simply because the choose to dissolve my position.

I will always be the kind that likes to blaze my own trail by following the steps of successful internet marketers. That is why some of the most successful internet marketers are my personal friends, coaches and mentors.

Here are three quick steps to fight off the dream killers in your life.

1) Find yourself someone who is successful in what you want to create online and follow their teaching. Let them mentor you. This is critical so you can shorten up the learning curve.

2) As hard as it may be, disregard those nay sayers and dream killers. Especially if they have no idea of the subject you are interested in. Everyone likes to give you their two cents even when you never asked for it. They will come in all forms, friends, family and foes.

3) Attack your daily plan to push your business forward every single day. Find at least one thing you can do to take action on towards your goals every single day. I recommend at least three tasks each day to find the greatest level of success.

Every parent should be somewhat involved in the school that their child attends.  The question is are the parents involved enough?  The truth is some parents don't care and some are a little too extreme.  Many schools desire to have more parent involvement, which has positives and negatives to the idea that will be discussed in this article.

PRO: Increasing parent involvement in the schools allows parents to be more aware of the situations at the school.  For example, the school may have needs that the parents bring up because they are there more and become aware.  The school may meet the need or the parent may even suggest meeting the need for the school as a token of charity through donation.  The more a parent is at school will allow them to see more and be aware of the needs of the school which will reflect directly to the education of the child.

CON: A parent is too involved in the school could result in them being too opinionated.  The more a parent is at school could make them think they know more and their opinion could be given more.  The opinion of a parent is good to have, but not five opinions for every one issue. 

PRO: A parent whom is at school more will learn to work together with the teacher as a team.  If the parent knows and understands the need of their child more by communicating more frequently with the teacher, then they can be a help to them at home.  The best team at school is that of the parent and teacher and when they realize they are on the same page, then the child's chances for success increase greatly.

CON: The parent begins to complain the more they are at school.  A parent has an idea of how the school should be run, but that is probably not their area of expertise or they would be running a school.  The complaining can sometimes be valid, but the staff of the school understand the school system better than the parents and most of the time, the complaining is in vain. 

Parent involvement in schools is necessary, but there has to be a balance of how much time they spend in the school and that decision should be made by the school system.

Making a back to school photo book with kindergarten kids is a great way to get ready for the first day of school. For this craft you will need a camera, markers, a hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, heavy paper, a hole puncher, scissors, and ribbon.

Start by cutting the heavy paper into several squares about 6 inches in length and width. Then talk to your kindergarten kids about the first day of school. Discuss the experiences that your kindergarten kid will have at school such as nap time, playing, and snack. Also discuss the steps before getting ready for school such as waking up and brushing teeth. Write an activity on the bottom of each paper square and place them in order.

Also write a title for the book on a piece of paper. Help kindergarten kids decorate the title pager and edges of the pages. Then have fun with your kids by having kids act out the different activities written on the page. Take pictures will doing this and add them to the pages in the book. Then punch holes in the top of each page in the same spot and string them on the ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow and the book is complete.

Back to School Countdown

For this back to school craft, with kindergarten kids, you will need index cards, markers, and a stapler. Start by helping kids write first day of school on an index card. Then help kindergarten kids write a number from 1-10 on individual index cards.

Allow kindergarten kids to decorate each card using the markers. Also help kids write down important things they will do to get ready for going back to school like shopping and packing their backpacks on the cards. Then staple the cards in order from 10-1 and add the first day of school card at the bottom. Staple the cards together, and as you countdown to the first day back to school kindergarten kids can pull off another card.
