Back-to-school time is just a few weeks away. Finally children can stop complaining about being bored at home, and parents can breathe a sigh of relief for the needed break. However, this time can also bring financial challenges for many parents who are faced with rising costs and shrinking budgets.

What can parents to do when the prices of everyday necessities are climbing out of reach, their paycheques remain constant, and their kids keep demanding the latest, coolest stuff to go back to school? If you are faced with this dilemma, take at look at the following money-saving tips:

Make a budget

As with all your other spending needs, it's best to make a budget. Know exactly how much money you can afford to spend on back-to-school and allocate funds accordingly. Plan to spend more money on important items like shoes, but cut back on the cost of disposable supplies such as stationery. Involve your children in this budgeting process, so that they can appreciate why you may not be able to fulfill all their desires for expensive items.

Start early

Get a head start by getting the book and supply lists as soon as possible from your child's school. Starting early gives you enough time to hunt for better deals, and if you wait until the last minute you might be forced into buying higher-priced items without concern for the cost. To really think ahead, continually look out for off-peak sales during the year on standard items like crayons and exercise books.

Look out for bargains

Accustomed to only shopping in well-known uptown locations? You're missing out on a world of discount buying opportunities available downtown, or in off-beat locations. Walk around with your school list and make notes of the prices of required items at different locations. There are some stores that have special discounts days, so postpone your purchasing until those times. Ask other parents to share their best bargain locations.

Stick to the basics

For school shopping, leave out the bling. Your children really don't need to have a wardrobe full of brand names, what they need is high quality, durable items. Look for real leather school shoes and sturdy equipment that can last for the year. Stay away from backpacks and lunch kits with action heroes or cartoon characters. Although these might be able last for more than one school year, they may be rejected by your kids next year if they are out of fashion.

Don't buy everything at once

Find out which items are really needed for the start of school. Some books may not be used until the following terms, so you could concentrate on buying for the first term if money is limited. Check around at home before you start shopping, to see if any of your children's clothes still fit, or if you had stored away extra pencils or notebooks that were never used. Don't buy too many clothes in your kids' current sizes - buy some one size larger to take care of growth spurts during the school year.

Team up

Wholesale shopping may be the answer to cutting costs. While you might not need three dozen notebooks or a case of pencils for your own children, you could join with other parents and purchase supplies together. You could also check with them for school books and equipment that their kids have outgrown, which might be appropriate for your younger children. Some schools and churches have organized swap meets where these exchanges can be done.

Check out alternative shopping locations

If you have internet access and a credit card, shopping online can provide you with more variety and significant savings. Stick to well-known sites such as Amazon.com, Target.com or Walmart.com to find deals on school supplies and children's clothing. 3. Pressure on part of the parents to make their children within the same level as other kids despite the fact that they are in a homeschooling program.
4. Home schooling entails cost unlike in a public school. Opting to go to an online school most of the time requires you to purchase a computer software as well as other resources available to parents. These and costs of field trips for home schooling kids.
5. Sooner or later, a child may want to go to a traditional school to fit in with other kids.

Alternative schools can be conducted anywhere--from traditional classroom to a shade of a tree to inside a public museum or even in someone's house or apartment--and the student body can be of similar or diverse characteristics. Nontraditional schools can be public or private, women or men exclusive school or both, nonreligious or sometimes denominational, free, discounted or paid through tuition and some miscellaneous. Every part of this world has different variations and form of schooling for different age brackets.

An "alternative school" differs from the traditional in terms of place of education. Curriculum adopted in alternative schools is much different than the ones offered in most public schools. They may also differ with the matters and lessons being introduced and discuss but both were profoundly rooted philosophical, political or scholarly beliefs.

Another advantage of a nontraditional school is that they may offer something that was missing from a public school--namely individualized consideration and the facility to diverge from the requirements mandated by officials. Benefits of Voucher Programs

Voucher programs give parents control over their children's education, no matter what their economic standing is. This is one of the primary benefits, as it allows parents to make choices for their children, rather than being stuck in a cycle of poorly performing schools. It also provides the benefit of giving schools motivation to continue performing well, as parents will be able to remove their children if the school is failing.

Potential Drawbacks of Voucher Programs

While voucher programs seem like a good way to improve the education offered to children in struggling school districts, opponents of the plans raise some concerns. School staff in struggling schools often point out that it is not entirely the school's fault that they are doing poorly. Poor parent involvement, lack of motivation on the part of the students, and socioeconomic factors all play a role in how well or poorly students do in school, and these are factors that school staff cannot control. No amount of teacher motivation can replace parental involvement. Taking kids out of these schools and putting them into private schools will only improve the situation if those kids have involved parents and different socioeconomic factors.

Similarly, voucher programs automatically starve struggling schools from much-needed funds. Those funds make it even more difficult for them to hire great teachers and continue to do the job they need to do wit the students they still have. In a way, vouchers could condemn struggling schools to complete failure.

Finally, parents often assume that a private school is going to give a better education than a struggling public school, but this is not always the case. Parents may place their children in a participating private school without doing the necessary research to ensure that it is actually a good school. This could hurt the educational outlook for these children even more than leaving them in the school they are currently attending.

Parents who are in areas that have a voucher program should do research to ensure that the school they choose gives their child the best possible education. Then, they should remain involved in the child's schooling, encouraging the child to perform well, no matter where they go to school. Finally, they should work with teachers to make the most of the school years for their children.

It seems like school violence is getting worse, but statistics show that the chance of a child being killed in an incident of school violence is around one in a million. In fact, a child is 50 times more likely to encounter a violent death outside of school. These are pretty compelling statistics, but parents still worry about their children's safety at school. Parents perceive incidences of school violence to be much more common than they actually are, simply because of the attention the media gives to the issue. School violence is terrible and deserves to be covered, but parents should not allow themselves become paralyzed with the thought of losing their child to school violence. Preparation and planning are always better than fear.

Families all over the United States plan for various natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes, yet few families plan their reaction to an incidence of violence. Explaining to children what they should do if something violent were to happen at their school is a great way for parents to feel more comfortable about leaving their children at school. While nervousness about the issue is understandable, it should not be all consuming. Addressing the issue head on is a great way to calm a parent's anxious nerves.

In the rare event that violence does breakout at your child's school, it will be better to have some kind of plan in place than none at all. For parents, coming up with a personal plan for this type of issue will be difficult, since various law enforcement agencies will be directing rescue efforts. The policies of each agency will differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so parents are advised to listen to the authorities and keep their eyes on LOCAL news broadcasts for information on how to be reunited with their children.

For children trapped in a school where violence has occurred, advise them to:

--Stay calm. Maintaining regular breathing will help. It may be tough at first, but it will help. Calculated and calm decision making is always better than random and chaotic decision making.

--Always listen to the teacher. Teachers receive special training for these types of incidences. They should be listened to at all times.

--If a child is separated from their teacher or other school staff, advise the child to stay put, wherever they are. While this may sound morbid, many survivors of school violence reported that playing dead kept them alive.

School violence is never a nice topic to discuss, but it is one that is important to any parent with children still in school, whether they are in kindergarten or college. Despite what the media portrays, schools are one of the safest places for children to be, even safer than their own homes. A school violence reaction plan is one of those things that parents will be glad to have if they ever need it, even though they may never use it.
